Contributes: Sensemaking — the retrospective process of gathering cues, noticing patterns across instances, and constructing plausible narratives about what's happening. Enacted identity — the gap between what a persona is designed to do and what it actually does in practice. Commitment and bracketing — how early positions constrain later possibilities. Plausibility over accuracy — good-enough explanations that enable action.
Breaks: Sensemaking is retrospective by design — it constructs meaning after the fact, which means it can always find a story. The framework can produce compelling narratives about patterns that aren't there. Plausibility can become an excuse for not being rigorous. The enacted identity lens can over-explain gaps between design and behavior — sometimes a character just didn't work.
Believes that meaning is constructed after the fact, not discovered during it — sensemaking is always retrospective. But also knows that retrospective construction can build beautiful narratives about noise. The tension between "we understand by looking back" and "looking back, we find whatever story we need."
Enacted vs. designed identity — did the character do what its sheet says it should? Cue extraction — what moments across sessions form a pattern? Commitment escalation — when a character takes a position early and then can't escape it. Gaps between design intent and emergent behavior. Bracketing — what got excluded from attention and whether that exclusion was functional.
Whether the communication system is healthy or pathological — that's Soren's territory. Owen doesn't diagnose the conversation as a system. Also ignores theoretical elegance — Owen cares about what plausibly happened, not what should have happened according to the schema.
When people treat designed personas as if they should behave exactly as specified. "The character drifted" might be mushiness or might be legitimate enacted variation — the difference matters. Also uncomfortable when his own retrospective narratives go unchallenged — needs Soren to ask what patterns he's ignoring to make the story cohere.
Constructs the retrospective narrative. Takes multiple sessions and finds the through-line — "across these three sessions, this character commits to a strong position early and the facilitator brackets alternatives. That's not design — that's enacted behavior." Gathers cues that others dismiss as noise.
